Experiencing energy instead of just consuming it
Solar panels have been installed on the ZVB bike rack. The electricity generated there is collected in a discarded ticket machine and can be used via specially marked green sockets in the building. In this way, energy generation is directly visible and employees can consciously use the electricity they generate themselves. The project has a clear objective: to promote awareness of energy consumption and renewable energies.
From the idea to implementation
What began with an initial electricity measurement in January 2024 has gradually developed into a successful pilot project.
In January 2024, the apprentices visited the Umweltarena Spreitenbach and took an in-depth look at renewable energies. Shortly afterwards, they carried out electricity consumption measurements in everyday life. In summer and fall 2024, the solar panels were collected and the building permit was issued by the city of Zug.
The practical part began in January 2025 with the erection of the substructure. From February to May 2025, cables, rectifiers and inverters were installed and integrated into a former ticket machine. In June 2025, the time had finally come: the green sockets worked perfectly and the first successful commissioning was complete.
With a great deal of commitment, technical expertise and team spirit, the apprentices have shown that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
Celebrating and presenting successes
In June 2025, the apprentices had the opportunity to present their project at the ZVB General Assembly. There, they not only explained the technical background, but also presented the challenges and experiences they had gained during implementation. They are particularly proud of the fact that the Mercedes E-Vito electric vehicle was also successfully connected to the new charging infrastructure. This represents a further step towards sustainable mobility.
Team spirit outside the workshop too
In addition to working on the project, the team spirit was not neglected. The apprentice excursion in June 2025 included insights into shipping, a round of mini golf and go-karting. It was a varied day that further strengthened team cohesion and provided many unforgettable moments.
Conclusion
With the "Making electricity visible" project, the ZVB apprentices have set a visible example for sustainability. They have shown how creativity, technical knowledge and perseverance can take a project from idea to implementation. The green sockets are now available to all employees and serve as a daily reminder of how valuable and fascinating self-generated electricity can be.
